Cabrera

Located in the Mediterranean Sea off the southern coast of Majorca, Cabrera is an island in Spain's Balearic Islands. The Talayotic Period, which lasted from 1300 BC to 123 BC, is when archeological evidence indicates that humans first settled on the island of Cabrera.

The island supported a modest population during the Byzantine-Paleo Christian era (425 AD–903 AD), which was centered in the Cabrera port area. In a basilica there was also a monastery, the ruins of which are still visible today.

The Castle of Cabrera was taken by Ottoman admiral Hayreddin Barbarossa in December 1530, and he began to use the island as a base of operations for his military activities in the region. The Ottoman Empire ruled the Mediterranean at the middle of the 16th century thanks to Barbarossa's naval successes.

When Cabrera was chosen to house over 9,000 French captives taken during Napoleon's attempts to invade Southern Spain, it once again played an intriguing position in the background of history.
