Fidonisi (Snake Island)

The island has been inhabited since classical antiquity, when a Greek sanctuary dedicated to Achilles stood there. Due to the white marble formations that may be found on the island, the Greeks called the island Leuke (literally, "White Island"), while the Romans called it Alba.

The island was renamed Fidonisi by the Greeks during the Ottoman Empire, and the naval battle that took place there in 1788 between the Ottoman and Russian fleets as part of the Russo-Turkish War of 1787–1792 is named after the island.

The Russian Empire's Black Sea Fleet constructed the Snake Island Lighthouse in the fall of 1842. The lighthouse is a 12-meter-tall, octagonal structure that stands 40 meters above sea level and situated close to the island's highest point. The temple of Achilles, which had previously been destroyed, is now the site of a lighthouse that is next to a residence. In 1823, the remains of the Greek temple were discovered.

  • In ancient times, the Greeks believed the island to be home to Achilles, and there were numerous shrines to him on the island.
  • "Russian warship, go fuck yourself" was the last communication made on 24 February 2022 during the Russian attack on Snake Island in Ukraine's territorial waters by border guard Roman Hrybov to the Russian missile cruiser Moskva.
