Socotra (Garden of Eden)

Socotra is an island located in the Arabian Sea, off the coast of Yemen. Scholars disagree on the origin of the island's name. There are three hypotheses on the origin of a name. Dhu-Sakurid is a Greek name derived from the name of a South Arabian tribe recorded in Sabaic and Aramitic inscriptions. "Dvipa Sukhadara" means "island of bliss" in Sanskrit. Suq, market, and qutra, a colloquial variant of qatir, which alludes to dragon's blood.

Socotra is known for its unique flora and fauna, with over 700 plant and animal species found nowhere else on Earth. The island is sometimes referred to as the "Galapagos of the Indian Ocean" due to its exceptional biodiversity. Socotra has a unique and otherworldly landscape, with rocky cliffs, sandy beaches, and dramatic mountain ranges. Visitors can explore the island's many natural wonders, including its bizarre-shaped Dragon's Blood Trees, which are prized for their medicinal properties.

  • Several ancient texts suggest Socotra is the original location of the Garden of Eden.
