Habesos Antiphellus Map

Habesos (Antiphellus)

Antiphellus, also known as Antiphellos, was a city in Lycia that served as the harbor for Phellus. It was located at the mouth of a harbor on the south coast. Sir Francis Beaufort, the discoverer of this ancient location, gave the bay at the head of which Antiphellus sits the modern name of Vathy. Pliny mentions its old name as Habessus and praises the quality of its sponges.

Antiphellos was one of the six major cities of the Lycian League, a confederation of Lycian city-states that existed from the 6th century BCE until the Roman conquest in the 1st century BCE. The city was also home to several important temples and sanctuaries, including a temple dedicated to the goddess Aphrodite. During the Hellenistic period, Antiphellos was controlled by the Seleucid Empire and later by the Ptolemaic Kingdom of Egypt. The city was eventually incorporated into the Roman province of Lycia and remained an important center of commerce and culture throughout the Roman era.
