Jamestown

Jamestown was established in 1607 by the Virginia Company of London, a group of investors who were granted a charter by King James I to colonize North America.

The first settlers of Jamestown were 104 Englishmen who arrived in three ships: the Susan Constant, the Godspeed, and the Discovery. They were led by Captain John Smith, who famously declared, "He that will not work shall not eat."

Jamestown was located on a peninsula on the James River, which provided access to the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. The site was chosen for its defensibility and proximity to fresh water. The early years of Jamestown were marked by hardship, disease, and conflict with Native American tribes. Many of the settlers died from starvation, disease, and Indian attacks.

In 1676, Jamestown was burned to the ground during Bacon's Rebellion, a conflict between Virginia's governor and the colonists over issues of political power and Indian policy.

  • Jamestown was the first permanent English settlement in North America.
