Karakatoa

Krakatoa, also known as Krakatau, is a volcanic island located in the Sunda Strait between Java and Sumatra in Indonesia. It is known for its violent and catastrophic eruption in 1883, which was one of the most powerful volcanic eruptions in recorded history. The term Krakatoa appears for the first time in the Old Sundanese manuscript Bujangga Manik, which was most likely written in western Java in the late 15th century. Krakatoa is referred to be "the island of Rakata, a mountain in the middle of the sea" in this context.

The eruption of Krakatoa had a profound impact on the study of volcanology and geology, and it continues to be studied by scientists today. The island itself was destroyed by the eruption, but a new volcanic island, Anak Krakatau, has since formed in the same location.
