Lindisfarne
Lindisfarne, also known as Holy Island, is a small tidal island located off the northeast coast of England. It is famous for its role in early Christianity and the Viking invasions of England.
Lindisfarne played an important role in the spread of Christianity in England. The famous Lindisfarne Gospels, a masterpiece of early medieval art, were created by the monks of Lindisfarne in the early 8th century and are now housed in the British Library.
Lindisfarne was founded in AD 635 by the Irish monk Aidan, who was sent by the Celtic Christian king Oswald to establish a monastery on the island. Lindisfarne became a center of Christian learning and culture, and the monks who lived there produced many works of art and literature. In the Middle Ages, Lindisfarne became a pilgrimage site and a center of Christian scholarship. The ruins of the medieval priory, which was built on the site of the original monastery.
- In AD 793, Lindisfarne was attacked by a Viking raiding party, marking the beginning of the Viking Age in England.
