Playa Giron
Playa Giron is located in one of the largest wetlands in the world, the Cienaga de Zapata. The adjoining village of Giron was named after the notorious French pirate Gilberto Giron.
In April 1961, Playa Giron was one of two landing locations for seaborne forces of around 1,500 armed Cuban exiles in the Bay of Pigs Invasion, an American CIA-sponsored attempt to destabilize Cuban Prime Minister Fidel Castro's new government. Fighting raged for 72 hours in numerous portions of the Cienaga de Zapata, with Playa Giron being the last region seized by the invaders. The Museo Giron is now a tiny museum dedicated to the history of the struggle.
- The Bay of Pigs Invasion was a failed attempt by the United States to overthrow the government of Cuban leader Fidel Castro in April 1961.
