Port Royal
Port Royal is a city located at the end of the Palisadoes strip, at the mouth of Kingston Harbour, in southeastern Jamaica. It was founded in the late 17th century by the British and quickly became an important center of trade and commerce due to its strategic location on the trade routes between Europe, the Caribbean, and the Americas.
Before European arrival, the Taino indigenous people of the Caribbean populated this area for millennia. During their fishing trips, they used the region known as Caguay or Caguaya. Although it is unknown if they actually lived in the area, they did live in other regions of Jamaica.
In 1692, a massive earthquake struck Port Royal, causing much of the city to sink into the sea. Thousands of people were killed in the disaster, and much of the city's wealth was lost. The earthquake is considered to be one of the deadliest in history.
- Port Royal was also known as the "wickedest city in the world" during the 17th century, due to its reputation as a hub for piracy, smuggling, and debauchery.
- The infamous pirate, Henry Morgan, used Port Royal as his base of operations during the late 1600s.
