Rodos

Throughout its history, the island has been referred to as Rodos in Greek. Lindos was another name for it. The island's name might be derived from erod, Phoenician for snake, since the island was home to many snakes in antiquity.

Rhodes is known as the "Island of the Sun" because of its patron sun deity Helios, "The Pearl Island," and "The Island of the Knights" because of the Knights of Saint John of Jerusalem, who dominated the island from 1310 to 1522. The city of Rhodes is located at the northern tip of the island, as well as the site of the ancient and modern commercial harbours.

  • The island is home to the Colossus of Rhodes, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The statue was a massive bronze sculpture of the sun god Helios that stood at the entrance to the harbor of Rhodes.
  • Knights Hospitaller, also known as the Knights of Saint John who ruled the island, established a Christian stronghold on the island and built famous medieval town of Rodos.
